Trekking the Little Lucanian Dolomites: From Castelmezzano to Pietrapertosa

 

Embark on an unforgettable adventure along the Seven Stones Path, an ancient farming trail of about 2 km that connects the charming villages of Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa. This trek will take you through enchanting landscapes, with altitudes ranging from 920 meters in Pietrapertosa to 660 meters in the valley of the Caperrino stream, before ascending back to 770 meters in Castelmezzano.

Explore the historic center of Castelmezzano, also designated as one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy” and a symbol of the Lucanian Dolomites. Discover the typically medieval urban structure of Castelmezzano, characterized by buildings nestled in the rock and numerous steep stairs that invite you to climb to the heights, offering wonderful views of the Lucanian Dolomites.

 

The Seven Stones Path

 

The seven stages of the path, each with a keyword that captures the essence of the story – destinies, enchantment, spell, witches, flight, dance, and delirium – will guide you on an exciting journey. In particular, at the central stage dedicated to witches, you will have the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the story, enriched by scenographic and sound suggestions that bring to life tales of old. Along the way, let yourself be captivated by the stories passed down orally and the collective imagination inspired by the book Vito Danced with the Witches by Mimmo Sammartino. Each stop on the path is a multisensory experience: you will find artistic installations that evoke scenes from the narrative, accompanied by soundscapes that pay tribute to the magic of the surrounding nature.

Enchanted by the picturesque Lucanian Dolomites, explore the village of Pietrapertosa, which will gift you spectacular and unique views. Inside Pietrapertosa, listed among the “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy,” you can visit several notable places. Explore the original nucleus of the current settlement – of medieval origin, which still retains the ancient Saracen name of Rabata – nestled at the foot of the Norman-Swabian Castle.
